Music

Music is an integral part of the Monticello curriculum. Students learn foundational skills in lower grade levels then focus on instrumental or vocal music in upper grade levels. The history of classical, folk, and other musical traditions is also woven into the Core Knowledge curriculum.

A Solid Foundation

Kindergarten through 4th grade students are taught using the Kodály method. Kodály is an ear training method from Europe that focuses on building a strong sense of pitch and rhythm. It is familiar to most people due to the use of the Do-Re-Mi scale. For a list of the primary musical works students explore, see below.

Music Performance

In 5th grade (at Highbury), students transition to musical performance, choosing between choir, band, or orchestra. As 7th and 8th graders, these students, in the third and fourth year of music performance, consistently receive ratings of Excellent and Superior at Utah music festivals. Monticello alumni have also been selected as Sterling Scholars in Vocal Performance and Instrumental Music.
