Starting in kindergarten students study both art history and studio art in depth. As much as possible, this study is integrated with the Core Knowledge sequence. For example, as students learn about medieval times in 4th grade History and Literature, they learn about stained glass windows and other features of gothic architecture in Art. Over the course of nine years, students are able to develop a strong understanding of art history and apply artistic techniques to develop their own personal style.
Since 2012 students at Monticello have been creating incredible original content for a winter online art show to showcase every child. Each year a different working artist acts as the judge. See it for yourself at: http://monticelloart.weebly.com/
Every spring the art department turns the first floor of the school into an impressive K-8 gallery of work. Paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings take center stage displaying history based projects that our unique art curriculum revolves around.
Students in Middle school have the opportunity to participate in an art show sponsored by the city of West Valley. They learn to display their work and talk to community members.
By participating in the annual Valentine contest, students learn about the process an artist goes through from design to sale. Winning designs are turned into postcards that can be purchased and traded by students.
The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art brings their Art Truck to the school annually to showcase contemporary art.
